General description of the collection: The John Sayers papers includes a photocopied memoir written in 1994 and a letter dated 1 January 1996 written to Sayers' sister concerning his memoir. In the memoir, Sayers describes his military career, hs meetings at home with his mother, sister, and girlfriend on furloughs, and his experience crossing the Atlantic on the Santa Rosa. He describes his reconnaissance missions, including one when he discovered the Germans using sheperds as artillery spotters. He notes that he killed the sheperd that passed his unit's position after a fake encampment was shelled.

Staff Sergeant (SSG) John Sayers was inducted into the Army on 23 December 1942. He received a six-month deferment because he was the sole supporter of his mother. Sayers received his training at Fort Dix and was stationed with the 12th Armored Division at Fort Campbell, KY. He was transferred to B Company, 51st Armored Battalion, 4th Armored Division, and sailed to England. Sayers landed on Omaha Beach after D-Day and took part in relieving the 4th Infantry Division.
